New Delhi, October 5: A controversy has erupted in Delhi after three women journalists covering a protest at Jantar Mantar accused police personnel of alleged sexual harassment and misconduct. The allegations relate to the October 3 demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police has confirmed receiving the complaints and transferred the matter to the Crime Branch for investigation.
According to the complaints, the journalists alleged that police personnel behaved inappropriately while protesters were being detained. One journalist claimed she was questioning the detention of women protesters when a police officer allegedly pushed her and behaved inappropriately.
Another journalist alleged that a policeman made inappropriate physical contact with her while she was recording the detention of protesters. The allegations have not been independently established, and the investigation is expected to determine what happened.
The allegations have sparked fresh concerns over the treatment of journalists covering protests and public demonstrations. The Press Club of India has expressed concern over the incident and called for an impartial investigation.
The Crime Branch is expected to examine statements from the journalists, police personnel, CCTV footage and video recordings from the protest site. Any further action will depend on the findings of the investigation.
