New Delhi, September 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in a ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme in Delhi on Friday drew criticism from the Congress, with Karnataka minister and Congress leader Priyank Kharge linking the event to the party’s questions over the Election Commission.
In a post on social media, Kharge said the Prime Minister had time for “Bhajan Clubbing” but not for answering what he described as serious questions about the functioning of the Election Commission and democratic institutions. He also alleged that the government remained silent when faced with difficult questions.
Modi attended the programme at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Park in Delhi on September 25, marking the 110th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya. During the event, the Prime Minister was seen listening to devotional songs, clapping and playing the khanjari.
The Congress criticism came amid its nationwide protests over the Election Commission, including demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party has also raised objections related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Election Commission, meanwhile, has rejected suggestions of a decision-making split, saying that operational queries and differing views during the process are part of normal institutional deliberations. It has maintained that key SIR decisions were unanimous.
