Ujjain: Tensions escalated in Ujjain on Monday over the proposed removal of a portion of the Shahi Masjid as part of a road-widening project ahead of the Simhastha Mela in 2028. A confrontation broke out between protesters and police at the site, with police using tear gas to control the crowd after stones were reportedly thrown at security personnel.

The road-widening project covers the stretch between Kanthal Square and Gopal Temple. Authorities plan to widen the road to around 15 metres, citing the need to improve traffic movement and infrastructure ahead of the expected influx of pilgrims during Simhastha 2028. Several structures have been identified as falling within the project area.

Members of the local Muslim community and mosque representatives have opposed the proposed removal, arguing that the religious structure should be preserved. The dispute has also reached the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Earlier, the court had rejected petitions challenging the municipal corporation's action, while further proceedings were scheduled before the court.

Following the confrontation, heavy police deployment and Rapid Action Force personnel were reported at the site. Authorities are maintaining security in the area as the legal and administrative dispute continues.
